POST-TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
Underwater Hockey New Zealand Inter Club Championships were held over
the weekend of the 4th - 6th August 2005, in Wellington.
Six Grades were offered, with four being filled. The finals for all four
grades were well worth a watch, but the unavailability of the WRAC grandstands due
to refurbishment must have detered members of the other 17 teams from watching. The
Premier final did result in a dozen or so spectators taking to the water, with
another 30 or so on the side of the pool.
Those who didn't hang around to see the Premier final between Pakuranga Makos
and Crocydylus Optimus Prime missed out, with an
enthralling game tied at two all at the end of regulation play. This result continued
the tight results of five draws in the round robin for the grade and three other games
with one goal difference.
As it was a final, there can only be one winner, so Chief Referee Vaughan Solomon announced that a golden goal playoff would ensue.
This mildy disappointed some spectators and water refs who would have like to see more of the
excellent play that extra time followed by a golden goal playoff if scores still tied would have
given - not sure what the players wanted!
The golden goal quickly occured,
with Crocs' Richard Maxwell scoring on the end of some wide passing. Ollie van Rooyen,
also from Crocs, maintains he would have scored the winning goal if Richard hadn't stolen the
puck off him.
The womens' grade final between Figjam Fluro Gluro and Going Postal Angels was a
closer game than the round robin game of 9-1 to the Fluro's, with the final
score being 7-3 to Fluro Gluro.
In the A grade final, the QEII Beefeaters were seeking to repeat their round robin
win of 4-3 (a penalty shot in the last ten seconds breaking the deadlock) over Phoenix Ra.
However, it wasn't to be, with QEII having a star forward on a plane back to Christchurch
and the Ra's welcoming Michael Casey back from illness. QEII threw everything into
attack, and not much into defence, and a one sided final ensued, with top seed
Phoenix Ra well deserved victors.
The B grade final saw 2nd seed Pakuranga C take on 1st seed Tauranga. In
the round robin, the two teams had drawn five all, so the stage was set for a
tense final. In a close game, the experience of the Pakuranga backline enable them to
come out on top with a three goals to two victory.

DRAFT DRAW VERSION 2 FOR CHECKING
Please download the Modified DRAFT DRAW (Version 2) for the 2005 Inter Club
Championships. Please note that this is not necessarily the final draw
and changes can occur (and already have). The only teams the latest changes should
affect are the P Grade Teams. The final draw will be inside the
programme booklet which will be handed out at the Captains, Coaches and Referees
meeting which will be held at 5.30pm on Thursday 4th August, at WRAC,
in Meeting Room 1 & 2 (Downstairs one).
Please pass onto teams and players that Pool Side changing is not
allowed. Any person caught poolside changing will be asked to leave
WRAC for the remainder of the day, if you are caught again you will be
banned from WRAC for two months. WUHA and UWHNZ fully supports this
rule and will support WRAC if any player disregards this or any other
rule set by WRAC Management.
Please note that we will be playing with 3 Water Referees, and 1 Chief
Referee as per international rules. We will try and ensure that there
is at least one Pro Referee in each court during the games. We will
also be playing with the NZ Puck.
Player Passes will be handed out at the Meeting and these must be used
for the duration of the tournament. If a player loses their pass, then
they will have to pay each time s/he exits and then reenters the Pool
Complex.
Finally, the Prizegiving will be held at the Brentwood Hotel, in Kemp
Street, Kilbirnie, Wellington. The Venue will be open from 6.30pm, but
if people are earlier there is a lounge area. Dinner will be served
from 7.30pm and with the Evening finishing at 12 - 12.30pm. (Rugby at
1am).
Many thanks and see you Thursday.

PRE-TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
Underwater Hockey NZ is committed to growing the size of the Inter-Club
Championships. It is our goal to increase the number of teams from 30
to 40 in the next couple of years. Aided by new pools that are being
developed and the growth of Underwater Hockey in secondary schools,
we predict that this will happen sooner rather than later. Your support
in sending as many teams to this tournament as possible helps us to
achieve these goals.
- Premier: 4 teams in 2004
- Womens Grade: 4 teams in 2004
- A Grade: 5 teams in 2004
- B Grade: 6 teams in 2004
- C Grade: 3 teams in 2004
The value of this tournament continues to increase as experience
gained at the Tournament has significant benefits to the development
of players. Teams that are attending the tournament for the first time
will notice a significant increase in their standard of play.
The entry pack will be available in approximately a week containing
information regarding rules, venue, and further prizegiving
information. The reason WUHA is sending out these forms separately is
to allow clubs to apply for funding as soon as possible and so
hopefully increase their chances of being successful.
Please note that the Final Entry date is Friday 10th July 2005.
Entries received after this date will not be accepted.
Also note that we have made avaliable both a Womens 'A' and 'B' grade.
Please try and support the growth of womens hockey in NZ by entering
teams in these grades.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact me via email or
