Trans Tasman Series Win to New Zealand
The Underwater Hockey Trans Tasman Tournament concluded on Saturday
21st April, on a positive note for the New Zealand Underwater Hockey
teams when 3 of the top New Zealand Teams took gold medals over
their Australian rivals.
The New Zealand Women's team faced tough competition from the World
number one ranked Australia Women's team. The determined New Zealand
Women's team with its mix of old and new players won all three games
in the series to win the Trans Tasman Trophy, for the first time
since 1991.
The World number one ranked New Zealand Men's team asserted their
dominance over the tournament early on and maintained their winning
streak to take the Open division Trophy.
Southern Hemisphere Championships
The finals in the Southern Hemisphere champs revealed the depth
of hockey in both New Zealand and Australian Underwater Hockey communities
with a win in the Masters grade to a very fit and experienced Australian
team. The New Zealand masters showed a very significant improvement
throughout the tournament with the benefit of playing a number of
games together revealing impressive underlying skills. The NZ masters
developing teamwork reduced the goal difference with each passing
game. Having started the game with enthusiasm and gusto, the NZ
Masters took the lead for a while, but were eventually beaten. The
final was won by Australia 3 -1.
The New Zealand Under 19 Men's team won their grade 6-0, showing
the high level of players coming though the ranks.
Having won the TranTasman series the NZ Women were faced with a
final in the SHC against an Australian team with a strong core of
experienced Worlds players, bolstered by some new talented players.
While the Australian team had been defeated in the round robin games,
the improvement in the 'team game' as players became familiar with
their teammates was evident. The game was exciting with very good
skills and puck control being demonstrated by both teams. Australia
went to half time up by two goals, (one a penalty goal) but three
second half goals to NZ, scored by Jess Lowther, Zoe Firth and Kaitlyn
White, matched the two scored by ex-pat Kiwis Julia Foulkes and
Marion Creser, both playing for Australia. Extra time was required
as the game was drawn 3 all at fulltime, and play continued to "Sudden
death". The Australians eventually surged down the pool to
score and finish the game ahead 4-3.
The NZ Open grade team then entered the pool and in another fine
display of skill, discipline and teamwork proceeded to score 9 goals
to 1 by Australia.
Congratulations to all Coaches and Managers for preparing and presenting
teams at a very high standard.
